Johnson & Johnson-DePuy Hip Replacement Early Failure and Recall
On August 26, 2010, DePuy, a division of Johnson & Johnson, announced a voluntary recall of two of its hip replacement products after years of complaints from doctors and patients as well as close scrutiny from the FDA regarding early failure of the products. DePuy, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, has sold more than 93,000 of these and similar products worldwide.

DePuy Products Recalled
DePuy products are used in both hip replacement and hip resurfacing. The latest recall includes both types of products:
• The ASR XL Acetabular System is a hip socket used in hip replacement surgery. This product has been approved and sold worldwide, including the United States.
• The ASR Hip Resurfacing System involves covering the ball of the femur with a metal cap and replacing the hip socket with a metal cup. This product has only been approved and sold outside of the United States.
Why are these DePuy products being recalled
Because DePuy hip replacement products are a type of device known as a “metal-on-metal” implant, experts believe they involve a higher risk of generating metal debris. This debris can cause painful inflammation and other symptoms that require a revision surgery to remove and replace the implant.
The FDA has received more than 400 complaints regarding early failure of DePuy hip replacement devices since 2008. While the implants are intended to last 15 years, 12 to 13 percent of patients require a painful revision surgery within five years.
In late 2009, DePuy announced that it was discontinuing sales of these products due to poor sales. In March 2010, the company warned doctors of the possibility of early failure. In its latest move, the company has advised doctors to discontinue implanting the devices. DePuy has also encouraged patients who have received a DePuy implant to visit their doctor for an evaluation of possible symptoms of implant failure, which include pain and difficulty walking.
