Bextra
Bextra is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory prescription medication used to control tissue inflammation related to osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is part of a drug group known as COX 2 inhibitors, which includes major brand names such as Celebrex and Vioxx. Pfizer, the manufacturer of Bextra, voluntarily recalled the drug on April 17, 2005 after studies found it increased the risk of severe cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks and strokes and contributed to the onset of Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a potentially fatal skin disease.
Bextra was approved by the FDA on November 16, 2001. Prior to its removal, the drug was widely prescribed to arthritic patients for pain relief. Bextra impedes the production of certain chemical messengers responsible for pain and swelling by blocking the COX 2 enzyme. Bextra, Celebrex and Vioxx have all been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular problems and the onset of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Of the three, only Celebrex is still available for purchase.
Pfizer’s inability or unwillingness to properly protect its consumers from the potentially fatal side effects of Bextra could make it liable for any injury or death associated with using this drug. If you or someone you know used Bextra and feel that you may be experiencing any of the negative side effects, it is important that you contact a lawyer to learn more about victim’s rights and the possibility of compensation.
Side Effects of Bextra
Bextra’s side effects can cause serious physical harm and, potentially, death. The increased risk of cardiovascular problems is the main reason the FDA recommended Pfizer cease marketing the drug. Cardiovascular issues associated with Bextra include blood clots, heart attacks and strokes.
Some users of Bextra have also experienced the onset of Stevens Johnson syndrome, a skin disease that can ultimately lead to death. This severe syndrome affects the skin and mucous membranes throughout the body and in many organs, including the respiratory system and eyes. The syndrome is extremely painful and has a high fatality rate. Symptoms of Steven Johnson Syndrome can include:
- Constant headaches
- Body aches/chills
- Diarrhea
- Red rashes and blisters
If you or someone you know has contracted Stevens Johnson syndrome or experienced symptoms associated with cardiovascular problems after taking Bextra, you may be entitled to receive compensation.
