Amylin Pharmaceuticals’ and Eli Lilly & Co’s Byetta has been linked with serious adverse side effects prompting FDA officials to target the diabetes drug for a potential black box warning. The FDA has been evaluating Byetta side effects since reports first surfaced linking this defective drug with pancreatitis.
Byetta was approved for use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes in 2005. The brand name for exenatide, Byetta is part of a class of drugs known as incretin mimetics. Administered via subcutaneous injection, numerous patients have experienced serious Byetta side effects. However, the incretin mimetic gained notoriety in October 2007 when the FDA issued an advisory reporting 30 cases of acute pancreatitis linked with use of the drug.
Byetta and Pancreatitis
The most common of the Byetta side effects is acute pancreatitis, which is a swelling of the pancreas that can result in nausea, vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Consumers are made aware of such minor side effects as per FDA regulation. Amylin Pharmaceuticals is under fire as a result of a serious side effect associated with the drug that consumers were not previously warned about.
In October 2007, there were 30 reports of sudden, or acute, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). The suspected link between use of the diabetes drug and development of the inflammatory condition led FDA officials to request a label change providing consumers with a precautionary warning regarding the link.
In 2008, the FDA revealed information on an additional 10 cases of Byetta-related pancreatitis. Unlike the 30 cases reported in 2007, the 10 reported in 2008 were severe pancreatitis. Initially, the FDA reported on six new cases in 2008, two of which resulted in death. Amylin updated this FDA report the following week with an additional four cases, each of which resulted in death. This took the total number of Byetta-related pancreatitis reports to 40; six of which have resulted in death.
The FDA is continuing to evaluate Byetta, with many people expecting the issuing of a black box warning for the incretin mimetic, the most serious warning leveled by the FDA.
