Byetta (exenatide) has been targeted by the FDA following reports of serious adverse effects associated with use. Approximately 40 cases of Byetta-related pancreatitis have been reported to the FDA, including six deaths.
Byetta is an injectable drug used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Although the FDA currently has no plans to request a recall of Byetta, it is expected to issue a black box warning label – the most severe FDA warning – for the under fire drug.
The FDA continues to evaluate Byetta to determine the extent of pancreatitis injuries associated with its use. The drug has not yet been conclusively identified as a cause of pancreatitis, though experts do believe a link exists between the two.
