The Facts

Super Poligrip and Fixodent are denture cream products used to adhere dentures to the mouth so that consumers do not have to worry about slippage or denture movement. Until recently, many denture cream products contained high amounts of zinc. In recent studies, denture creams such as Fixodent and Super Poligrip have been linked to zinc poisoning, overexposure to zinc. When high levels of zinc are present, the body reacts by decreasing its intake of copper, resulting in low copper. Low copper, or hypocupremia, may often lead to neuropathy, or nerve damage. The media started reporting on issues surrounding Denture Cream use; Sources included ABC News, the New York Times, and several notable medical articles.

Diagnosis

High zinc intake caused by denture creams such as Super Poligrip and Fixodent often lead to zinc poisoning, known as hyperzincuria. As a result of high zinc levels, the body lowers copper levels leading to copper depletion, known as hypocupremia. Copper is essential for several nerve related functions. As a result, Nervous disorders such as neuropathy and myelopathy have been linked to excessive use of Denture cream.

In studies, patients showed only mild neurologic improvement after they quit using denture cream and began taking copper supplements, hence injuries are permanent.

Numbness (often times a “pins and needles” feeling)
Tremor
Tingling
Cramps
Muscle Twitch

Loss of Sensation
Loss of balance
Difficulty breathing
Kidney failure
Liver failure
Unexplained Paralysis

High Zinc (Hyperzincemia) and Low Copper (Hypocupremia):

Lethargy
