Reglan (metoclopramide) is a drug used in the treatment of heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, vomiting, and to facilitate gastric emptying in patients with gastroparesis. Recently, the FDA has issued a warning linking use of Reglan with the serious conditions Tardive Dyskinesia and Tardive Dystonia.
Tardive Dyskinesia Symptoms
- Repetitive, involuntary, purposeless tics and spasms
- Grimacing
- Tongue protrusion
- Lip smacking
- Puckering and pursing of the lips
- Rapid eye blinking
- Rapid movement of the extremities
- Impaired movement of the fingers
Tardive Dystonia
Tardive Dystonia is a condition where the patient has sustained involuntary muscle contractions that produce twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal postures. It can be limited to a single body region or can extend to all of the extremeties and the face. These involuntary muscle contractions can be quite painful and disabling.
