Reglan (metoclopramide) is a drug used in the treatment of heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, vomiting, and to facilitate gastric emptying in patients with gastroparesis. It is also a treatment for migraine headaches. Reglan is considered a antiemetic and gastroprokinetic agent. It works by increasing muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract.
Reglan Warning
In February 2009, the FDA announced that use of Reglan has been linked to the severe disorders Tardive Dyskinesia and Tardive Dystonia. The FDA has ordered a "black box" warning for the drug, which is the FDA's strongest warning.
Tardive dyskinesia is a condition that is characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements of the extremities or lip smacking, grimacing, tongue protrusion, rapid eye movements or blinking, puckering and pursing of the lips, or impaired movement of the fingers. These symptoms are rarely reversible and there is no known treatment. If you are currently taking Reglan and are concerned about your health, you should contact your physician for additional information. Please follow this link for more details on Reglan side effects
